CHRONICLE BUREAU IMPHAL, 3rd May: Imphal East dominated swimming event as the State Level Women Sports Competitions 2017-18 under Khelo India got underway at Khuman Lampak Sports Complex on Thursday.
The Imphal East started off with six swimming gold medals, in addition to a gold in weightlifting. Dekalu Th Panmei (100m free style), Maltida (100m breaststroke), L Jessica (100m backstroke), Ch Merina (200m breaststroke) and Yaiphabi Thoudam (200m backstroke) all excelled in the individual competitions, with a gold medal being added courtesy of team event in 4x100m free style relay.
In the weightlifting, it was L Priya Devi who claimed the gold for the Imphal East side. Imphal West also had something to cheer about on the first day as K Urvashi (100m butterfly) and Loshingthoihembi (400m free style) grabbed a gold each, with H Jinarani Devi winning a gold in weightlifting. Kakching, meanwhile, rounded off their first-day campaign with two gold, both in swimming, through performances by S Sonali (200m individual medley) and Leisembi Chanu (200m free style).
The multi-sports events in basketball, weightlifting, swimming, wrestling, hockey, boxing, athletics, badminton, table tennis, kabaddi, kho-kho and volleyball drew around 1000 women participants across the state. Prior to the day’s competition, an opening ceremony was held with YAS minister Letpao Haokip, Bobby Waikhom, IAS, secretary YAS and N Praveen Singh, IAS, director YAS in attendance as chief guest, president and guest of honour respectively.
