SSUM slams government inaction on sexual assault cases
STAFF REPORTER IMPHAL, 29th Apr: Recalling how the government of Jammu and Kashmir took actions against two ministers for their interference in the rape and murder of a minor girl, Socialist Students’ Union, Manipur (SSUM) has questioned the silence of the state government over the involvement of an MLA in an alleged sexual assault case as well as over the incident of gang-rape of a minor girl in Bishnupur district.
Addressing media persons at its office here on Sunday, SSUM co-convener Soraisam Yaima said that there is an allegation of sexual offence against a BJP MLA and different organisations have even carried out demonstration demanding actions against the MLA. However, the BJP government has suppressed the matter.
On the other hand, the survivor of gang rape incident is in serious condition now, Yaima claimed, adding that there are incidents of security personnel threatening the victim family and two accused persons are still at large, thus proving the claim of political backing as true.
Questioning the government’s silence and inability to arrest the accused in this case, Yaima demanded the government to arrest the remaining co-accused and take up appropriate legal actions. He also warned of taking the matter to the Prime Minister with the demand for CBI enquiry if the state government fails to take up necessary actions.
He further demanded the government to investigate and arrest the murderer (s)) of Thongam Niru, whose skeletal remains were found from Kalenching in Okthilou Haraorou some days back.
