Elite weightlifting training unit at Khuman Lampak soon
Mirabai, Sanjita given grand welcome
STAFF REPORTER IMPHAL, 26th Apr: Following the gold medal winning feats of Saikhom Mirabai and Sanjita during the just concluded 21st Commonwealth Games at Gold Coast, Australia, the Union Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports has taken up steps to establish an elite weightlifting training unit at Khuman Lampak sports complex.
Officials of the Union sports ministry had already inspected the existing weightlifting training centre at Khuman Lampak and summoned state officials for a discussion on May 2 at New Delhi for upgrading the centre to an elite weightlifting training unit, stated director (YAS) N Praveen.
Praveen informed this to media persons during a reception function hosted in honour of Mirabai and Sanjita, who returned to the state Thursday for a three-day leave.
Upon their arrival at Imphal airport, Mirabai and Sanjita were accorded a warm welcome by weightlifters of SAG Imphal and RRC and players of National Sports Academy apart from family members and volunteers of local clubs and organisations.
Speaking at the reception function organised by YAS department at Khuman Lampak, N Praveen said that state government has taken steps to provide requisite diet for players who are undergoing training at the weightlifting training centre. Praveen also visited Mirabai’s house and met her parents Saikhom Kriti and Leima.
Speaking at the function, Mirabai expressed gratitude to YAS department and state government for recognising her feats and making her more popular. Mirabai also disclosed that she is currently undergoing intensive training at NSI Patiala for the upcoming Asian Games to be held in Indonesia.
Meanwhile, Sanjita stated that she is also undergoing intensive training at NSI Patiala so as to win gold in the upcoming Asian Games.
Later, she visited SAI-SAG Imphal and expressed gratitude to her first coach Ranjan and in-charge of SAI-SAG Imphal L Ibomcha.
It is worth mentioning that state government had announced Rs 15 lakh each for both Mirabai and Sanjita in recognition of their feats at Commonwealth Games.
