STAFF REPORTER IMPHAL, 13th Apr: In commemoration of the nine PLA cadres who laid down their lives while fighting against Indian army at Kodompokpi on April 13, 1982, thousands of people paid floral tribute at the Cheiraoching memorial site of the ‘martyred’ cadres on Friday.
In order to make the programme successful, family members of the ‘martyred’ PLA leaders and other members obtained permission from the High Court of Manipur.
From 6 am to 4 pm, thousands of people including women folk and students belonging to different communities and coming from both hill and valley districts visited the memorial site to offer floral tribute.
However, police personnel of Imphal West district verified all the visitors before allowing them to enter the memorial site.
It may be noted that in the Kodompokpi incident of 1982, nine members of PLA namely Thoudam Kunjabihari of Thongju Nameirakpam Leikai, Th Chaoba of Kwakeithel, M Premkumar of Tera Sapam Leirak, N Rajen Meetei of Naorem Leikai, Th Loken of Nameirakpam Leikai, L Dilip of Keishampat, M Paka of Heirok, S Kameshwar of Heibongpokpi and RK Khoisana of Moreh were killed by the security forces. In connection with the observance of ‘Athoubasingee Numit’, floral tributes were also reportedly paid by family members, relatives and well-wishers at Kodompokpi, Tekcham and Kakwa Naorem Leikai memorial sites. Meanwhile, the proscribed Revolutionary People’s Front (RPF) has conveyed gratitude to all the people who paid floral tributes at memorial sites on the outfit’s April 13 Martyrs’ Day.
RPF publicity secretary Roben Khuman thanked all sections of people including students, teachers, lawyers, civil society leaders who paid floral tributes at every memorial sites particularly at Cheiraoching site. The outfit also extended special thanks and appreciation to journalists, transport societies and doctors & nurses, staff of both the government and private institutions, Manipur police and traffic police who came to assist people at memorial sites.
According to a statement issued by Roben Khuman, Martyrs’ Day was also observed at general headquarters of the outfit and its armed wing PLA as also at units located at various parts of Manipur and outside including tactical command, strategic command, mobile battalions and central bureau and units. The outfit also thanked all the people who took active role in successful observance of Martyrs’ Day.
