Makar poster campaign begins, award mooted for creator
STAFF REPORTER IMPHAL, 12th Apr: ‘Makargi Poster Campaign’, a satirical poster campaign of Poknapham daily’s popular comic strip ‘Makar’ created by G Akshyakumar Sharma was launched and dedicated to late Hanjabam Shyamo Sharma in a function held at Aryan Theatre hall, Wahengbam Leikai Jiri Parking on Thursday.
Speaking as chief guest of the launch function, former president of Manipuri Sahitya Parishad professor N Tombi expressed his view that creator of Makar should be honoured with journalist’s award for his contribution to the society.
The title character of the comic strip highlights current affairs and issues through satirical narratives infusing thoughts to the public as well as the government. Such efforts should be regarded as work of a journalist like they do in national papers, he said. Prof Tombi also expressed concern over lack of platform to honour such cartoonists in the state.
Aryan Theatre president Prof Arambam Lokendro and Poknapham editor Aribam Robindro Sharma were the guests of honour.
Akshaykumar, creator of the popular comic strip ‘Makar’ of Poknapham was born on June 30, 1940 at Wahengbam Leikai.
He has now settled at Sagolband Salam Leikai. He completed a three-year degree course in fine arts and started his career as a cartoonist of Poknapham daily since September 1997. He began Makar series from January 1, 1998 which became the first cartoon comic strip to feature in any newspaper published in the state.
Akshaykumar and the gathering also offered floral tribute to the painting of late Hanjabam Shyamo and dedicated the poster campaign to him. Later, the first poster of the campaign was unveiled by the chief guest. The campaign will continue with more posters featuring issues of the state.
