ALLAFUM plans major protest in Imphal over Loktak scam
STAFF REPORTER IMPHAL, 8th Apr: Under the aegis of All Loktak Lake Areas Fishermen’s Union Manipur (ALLAFUM), fishermen took out a boat rally at Yangoi Maril (tributary) of the lake on Sunday demanding justice with regard to the infamous Loktak scam. They later held a meeting near Liklai Karong.
As resolved in the meeting, ALLAFUM will be organising a mass sit-in protest at Imphal to exert pressure on the government to investigate the Loktak scam and book those involved in the scam.
Speaking at the meeting, BJP Manipur Pradesh vice-president Moirangthem Aswinikumar assured that the BJP government will not spare anybody involved in the scam.
He also appealed to the people of the state to stand united against such corrupt practices and added that he will pursue the matter without any fear as long as the people are with the government.
Maintaining that the Loktak Hydro Power Project is the main reason behind the deteriorating condition of the lake, he appealed to the people for collective campaign towards saving the largest freshwater lake of the northeast region. He also said that N Biren is the only chief minister of the state who could boldly speak for decommissioning of the project for the betterment of the state and its people.
ALLAFUM secretary Oinam Rajen said that the previous government used its brute force to evict the poor fishermen in the name of cleaning the lake. Police burned several huts, clothes, textbooks and uniforms of students while evicting the fishermen from the lake. The government only thought of filling their pockets and not the welfare of the poor people, who are relying on the resources from the lake for their livelihood.
He said that the proposed major protest at Imphal will be participated by fishermen of Loktak Lake only and it will be held within this month.
