STAFF REPORTER IMPHAL, 10th Mar: As part of efforts being made by the state government to prevent floods under the Manipur Flood Plain Zoning Act, authorities have started demolishing illegal settlements and structures constructed along the banks of Imphal river in Imphal East district from Saturday.
The demolition was carried out by a team led by Porompat SDO Thounaojam Selina under the supervision of Imphal East DC. Houses which were set up illegally along the banks of Imphal river from Koirengei Bazar to Bashikhong were razed to the ground.
Speaking to media persons on the sidelines of the demolition drive, Porompat SDO Selina informed that the demolition of illegal settlements or structures has been conducted peacefully so far and no community hall or school set up near the river banks were destroyed during Saturday's demolition.
The remaining areas have been divided into three circles namely, Porompat, Bashikhong and Heingang and target has been set to complete the demolition works as soon as possible, she added.
Some houses set up along the river banks on the north side of Sanjenthong bridge were also included in the Saturday's demolition drive.
