Tribal students lock down ZEOs in hill areas

NEWMAI NEWS NETWORK IMPHAL, 10th Mar: As announced earlier, volunteers of All Tribal Students' Union, Manipur (ATSUM) and other tribal student bodies sealed/locked down all offices of the Zonal Education Officer (ZEO) in hill districts of the state on Saturday.
ATSUM is protesting against the state government’s alleged failure of addressing its demand for decentralising the digitisation process of education (S) department employees’ service books at the respective ZEO offices and not at the directorate office in Imphal.
At Churachandpur ZEO, student organisations based in the district pasted a notification which reads, “As per the directive of All Tribal Students’ Union Manipur (ATSUM) against the storage of employees’ service books in the Central Records Room of the Directorate of Education (S) in Imphal, the ZSF (GHQ), KSO (CCPUR), HSA, (Jt HQ CCPUR), MZP (Manipur) are compelled to seal/shut down the ZEO office from today until next order”.
Kuki Students' Organisation (KSO), Sadar Hills also locked down the ZEO office in Kangpokpi district by pasting a similar notification. Tangkhul Katamnao Saklong (TKS) also locked down the ZEO office, Ukhrul in the same manner.
Reports from Chandel, Tamenglong and Senapati district also said that ATSUM and other student bodies carried out similar protest in their respective districts.
The apex tribal student body stated that if the state government genuinely wants good governance then the ZEO offices should be upgraded with all the requisite infrastructure and amenities to enable storage of Service Books under the custody of the respective ZEOs. It also said that they do not object to digitisation but storage of service books in the Central Records Room of the directorate office in Imphal will bring forth chaos and trust deficit among the employees working in remote areas, it maintained.
ATSUM leaders informed Newmai News Network that the locking/sealing of ZEO offices in the hill districts is the first form of protest.
CHANDEL: In support of the demand of ATSUM to decentralise the digitisation process of education (S) department employee’s service books at respective ZEO office and not at the directorate office in Imphal, Naga Students’ Union Chandel (NSUC) sealed and shut down the office of Chandel ZEO with effect from March 9.
According to a release issued by NSUC information and publicity secretary K Samuel, following the failure of the state government to fulfill the genuine demand of ATSUM to decentralise the digitisation process of education (S) department employees service books at respective ZEO office, ATSUM has directed to shut down all ZEO offices in the hill districts of Manipur.
Responding to the call of ATSUM, NSUC has shut down the Chandel ZEO office from March 9 until next order from ATSUM and the department is requested not to open the office till notified. The union also appealed to all stakeholders and public of the district to bear with the union until further order.
CCPUR: Zomi Students’ Federation (ZSF), Kuki Students’ Organisation (KSO), Churachandpur branch, Hmar Students’ Association (HSA), Ccpur and Mizo Zirlai Pawl (MZP), Manipur closed down the main gate of ZEO Ccpur office and other rooms of the office from 1.30 pm in protest against storage of Employees Service Books at the Central Record Room of the Directorate of Education(S).

Exhibiting its support and endorsement of ATSUM, the Kuki Students’ Organisation Sadar Hills locked the office of ZEO Kangpokpi.
ATSUM has registered its first form of protest after resolving to shutdown all the ZEOs offices in the Hill district of Manipur alleging that the state government has failed to attend to their genuine demand to decentralise the digitization process.
KSO Sadar Hills president Thangminlen Kipgen along with secretary Ngamkhohao Haokip locked the office of ZEO Kangpokpi located at the District Headquarters around 4.30 pm.
Speaking to media persons, Thangminlen affirmed that KSO will render all assistance and support towards the movement so as to achieve the genuine demands while appealing to all to respect and give due regard with the action taken by the student body.
He also appealed to the ZEO concerned not to open the locked office till the ATSUM demands are honoured. In case of failure to comply with the demand, KSO will go ahead with whatever decision ATSUM takes over the matter.
